Out of Ideas: How to Draw Inspiration from Others' Aquascapes

Inspirational Pictures

A lot of people out there couldn’t be artistic if their lives depended on it. They still may appreciate art as much as the next person, but as soon as you give them a palette full of paint and tell them to paint a pretty picture or ask them to brainstorm creative ideas, they have no idea what to do.

For these people, getting a custom aquarium can be tough. They know that they find custom aquascapes beautiful (I mean, who doesn’t?) but they’re usually clueless about the type of aquascape that they want. Salt or fresh? Simple or ornate? Colorful or natural? In addition to these basic questions, there are hundreds of other tiny little details that are hard to convey, like where an aquascape pulls the viewer’s eye and how to design an aquascape so that people who sit on the sofa have the perfect viewing angle.

So, let’s find some inspiration! Today we’re going to look at some of the best spots for aquascape inspiration. The easiest way to get those creative juices going is to look at pictures of other aquascapes. Seems simple enough, doesn’t it? Luckily, there are dozens of websites that compile pictures of gorgeous aquascapes from around the world. I’ll spare you the trouble of hunting through Google by showing off some of my favorites.

The Aquatic Gardeners Association Aquascaping Contest

This international competition invites amateur aquascapers to submit their designs. What I love so much about this website is that the contest has multiple categories: small, medium, large, extra-large, biotope aquascapes, and paludariums. Thinking about installing a custom aquarium with a built-in living wall? Check out all of the paludarium entries for the past 12 years. If these award-winning aquascapes don’t inspire you, then nothing will!

Also, their site can be a little bit fickle at times, so be patient if it’s slow to load. The pictures are well worth it!

Tumblr and Pinterest

Tumblr and Pinterest have become a dumping ground for niche photos. All you have to do is type in the right keyword and you’ll be rewarded with thousands of photos. The only problem is that they aren’t very well organized. If you find a picture that you like, check out the specific Tumblr page or the account of the specific Pinterest user and you might find other pictures with the same style.
